UCLA Institute of the Environment

Situated in a state with incredible biodiversity and unique ecosystems, at the University of California, Los Angeles, in the Court of Sciences area of campus, is the Institute of the Environment (IoE). A center of interdepartmental instruction, our mission is to generate knowledge and provide solutions for regional and global environmental problems and to educate the next generation of professional leadership committed to the health of our planet. Through academic programs, research endeavors and advocacy we strive to address the planet’s most pressing concerns. The IoE has a series of initiatives aimed at the public that communicate our efforts on behalf of the environment. In January the IoE launched the La Kretz Center for California Conservation Science. In partnership with the National Parks, State Parks and Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority, the Center will focus on research, educational and outreach activities related to preserving California’s unique environment. The Center will offer public workshops, lectures and conferences about conservation.

The Oppenheim Lecture Series, held in the fall, winter and spring, hosts public presentations by world class speakers to educate, inform and build community discourse about the critical environmental problems of our time. Lectures have covered air pollution, the Southern California wildfires, human impact on the oceans, climate change and business, and the relationship between the environment and public health.A quarterly publication, The Southern California Environmental Report Card draws on the expertise of UCLA faculty and researchers to analyze current environmental issues. Its goal is to present scientific data in a format useful to the general public and to stimulate debate on policies intended to protect natural resources and public health. Past topics include lead exposure, environmental effects associated with film and television industry activities and urban parks.

Using cutting-edge corporate environmental research and education with current best practices and knowledge generated in the field, our Corporate Partners Program seeks to speed the process of green-innovation by collaborating with companies who believe in fostering a corporate culture that embraces success and environmental responsibility. Through this program UCLA environmental experts partner with corporations to explore the opportunities and challenges in environment and sustainability and advance green innovation and improve market performance. We also frequently provide consultation to policymakers on a range of environmental and sustainability issues. Last December IoE leadership participated in a meeting with L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa to brief him before his participation in the United Nations Climate Change Conference. The IoE continues to work on expanding our public programming.
