Organic Cotton: Clothing, Baby and Bedding

Unlike conventional cotton, organic cotton is grown without pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, chemical fertilizers or any other chemicals. For a complete list of chemicals commonly found in households, see here.

According to the UNESCO Institute or Water Education, cotton consists of 40% of the worldwide textile production (synthetic takes up about 55%). The worldwide consumption of conventional cotton requires 256 Gm3 (or 256 cubic gigameters) of water per year. That's more water than the amount of water everyone in the world consumes every 100 years. Organic cotton requires much less water.

As a consumer, the most important action to take is choosing to purchase organic cotton. For a complete list of businesses in Brooklyn that sell organic cotton, see here.
