Junk Mail

There are three steps to reducing your junk mail (four depending on where you live) (five if you want to spend some money).

Step 1

If you receive unwanted catalogs or other mail from specific sources, call the (often toll-free) customer service number of the organization or business. Request that your name be removed from their mailing list.

Step 2

The main consumer credit reporting agencies, TransUnion, Experian and Equifax, maintain mailing lists that are often used by credit card and insurance companies to send out Junk mail. The good news is that you can call a single number to get your name and address removed from the mailing lists circulated by all three agencies (as well as that of a fourth company, Innovis). 1-888-5-OPTOUT (1-888-567-8688)

Step 4 (if you live in an urban environment)

Living in a city–with all the houses within close proximity to one another–means businesses have the luxury of hiring people to walk around and drop off solicitations at individual houses. The most effective thing you can do to prevent these people from hanging plastic bags with newspaper ads in them is to put up a sign. Make it say something like "Do not post unsolicited advertisements on this property."
